About the Dot Matrix vs the Alphanumeric Display design

This design dates back to a small get together in a basement of one of our designers. While sitting back enjoying the night, a few friends were playing (our favorite) pinball. One person commented on how cool the dot matrix animations were on the game. The next comment was like, "Yeah, that would make a cool sign.... WAIT, that would make a cool T-Shirt,"! The design became reality during a short lived period of research in pinball machines from the 1980s. The idea eventually evolved into a spin-off of "My Dad is tougher than YOUR Dad," them meshed with the technology transition of the 1990s.

Design elements were created in Illustrator as one dot was created and then lined up in a 192x64 pattern. The text was overlaid and then each dot (of the negative space) was erased by hand. The alphanumeric display was created as one segment, then repeated and each character was created by removing the necessary vector shapes. The words "My" and "Your" were typed using "Brush Script" then three layers of Red, Green and Blue were overlaid with a blending mode of "lighten" to simulate a monitor with slightly off convergence. Vector art was exported to Photoshop and then saved as a *.PNG for final upload.
