T-Shirt Design from a Marketing Perspective
Most people who are designing a shirt never think about marketing principles when doing the fun work of laying out a graphic design. Here are a couple points to always consider though when you do your design (especially if you are making them for a group of people).
1) What's your Target Audience?
Never forget who you are designing the shirt for. Who is it that you expect to be seeing the shirt and, most importantly, who's wearing it? This will help you focus your creative design elements (like color, fonts, images, etc.) to the type of people it's meant to attract.
2) What's the Purpose of the T-Shirt?
A T-Shirt or design without a purpose is either a T-Shirt that will never sell or will just end up in the closet or attic until it turns musty. Focus on what your message is and what you want it to convey. This will allow you to cater your fonts, text, colors, images, etc. to suit the purpose and, hence, create a much more effective design.
3) Content is King!
A bunch of cool shapes and colors laid out in a graphic design program are just that, cool shapes and colors laid out. If people don't get what it's about and there's no meaning behind it, people can't relate to it and will not take a liking to it. Meaning for you = NO SALE. Great artists and designers may see a vision in the countless hours they put in on their elaborate designs but the true professionals will put their mind-set into the "heads" of others so they can make the content sensible to their target audience.
4) Have Fun
A T-Shirt that wasn't fun to create will probably not be fun to look at. Our primary message at Funny Graphic T-Shirts is that this process is fun and you should never feel like you are doing a chore when creating a great piece of art!
